THE TREASURE TROVE OF KNOWLEDGE (A Tribute to National Book Week 2021)

Libraries are storerooms of knowledge and a depository of learnings gathered throughout history, and yet because of the rise of technology and digital books, it is easy to think that it is a thing of the past and may soon cease to exist. Which may be farther from the truth – we hope. Giving indispensable sources of media to people in need of assistance, libraries are vast treasure troves that are widely underappreciated by most.

How can we say that a library is living up to its purpose? Its success can neither be measured as to how many people visit nor how physically attractive it is in the eyes of the public. Success can be measured with how much it has contributed in the individual growth of its guests, and in the process, captivate the people to read, develop habit of reading, and skyrockets their thirst for learning and expansion of knowledge through different kinds of mediums found inside it. With the wide variety of books present inside, one can easily say that it is essential in seeking answers for research in different kinds of subjects.

Now, more than ever, where the fake news epidemic and the climate of untruth and ignorance are becoming dense, the value of such institution are becoming clear. Because of the complexity of the connection between people and information systems, it becomes harder and harder to differentiate what’s true and what’s not. However, there’s one place that can be used to fact check, and where you can be rest assured that the materials you skim through are of credible and trustworthy sources. Guess? Yes, the library. The conservation of truth is important. And libraries, providing FREE access to educational, political, and centuries’ worth of history and truth, are paramount defenders against misinformation and piracy.

Now, how does this institution contribute to its community and reach out to the people of the society?

School libraries creates for its students an environment conductive to all sorts of learning. Libraries that are well-equipped with the right tools and are available to provide more hours to students and faculty alike, help students experience higher achievement, and thus, in the long run creates a path for the building of stronger communities filled with literate citizens. With this in mind, these libraries excel in being academic in nature and mostly gives importance on having study skill programs in place to supply assistance for students.

The library unites the community together in ways where everyone gains benefit. The function of a library in being a social hub is often times overlooked, but it’s there. Whether you are a student looking for answers to your questions, a researcher finding credible sources, an individual looking for a job, or just someone looking to read fun books as a part of your everyday leisure, everyone can be together to learn, share, and celebrate new learnings.

The library gives an open door to those who search, and rewards them with knowledge, ideas, and skills. Support our libraries, as they support us to be the outstanding versions of ourselves.
