THE TREASURE TROVE OF KNOWLEDGE (A Tribute to National Book Week 2021)

Image
Libraries are storerooms of knowledge and a depository of learnings gathered throughout history, and yet because of the rise of technology and digital books, it is easy to think that it is a thing of the past and may soon cease to exist. Which may be farther from the truth – we hope. Giving indispensable sources of media to people in need of assistance, libraries are vast treasure troves that are widely underappreciated by most.             How can we say that a library is living up to its purpose? Its success can neither be measured as to how many people visit nor how physically attractive it is in the eyes of the public. Success can be measured with how much it has contributed in the individual growth of its guests, and in the process, captivate the people to read, develop habit of reading, and skyrockets their thirst for learning and expansion of knowledge through different kinds o...

BRIDGING GAPS

Image
“My hope is that our new normal of today exposes what was wrong with our old normal yesterday, and sets up for a better normal tomorrow.” -           Dwayne Reed     How long has it been since you’ve last walked out of your room and chat freely with your friends as you walk by the school’s hallways? In every individual’s development and well-being, the right to go to school is central. And yet classrooms remain closed, just like any other place for social gatherings. College learners continue to grapple with the educational fallout of the pandemic. However, this sentiment can be a source of enlightenment and an important reminder that we need to unite in order to bridge the gap created by distance learning. Since the start of the pandemic, plans for the coming college semesters seems to be written in pencil. With this in mind, neither colleges nor students were able to draw up for longer campus closures. Teachers ...

WOMEN: Empowering Our Vanguards Against COVID-19

Image
Bringing different problems along its way for men and women, the COVID‑19 pandemic has created, and is still creating, a major disorganization worldwide. And being as risky as it is to act as vanguards against such foe, still, based on a data given by the OECD Policy Responses to Coronavirus, 70% that makes up the healthcare work force are women.   Maintaining ground on the frontlines against COVID‑19, the impact of the crisis on women is being put at greater risks. Women face compounding burdens, and that they are over-represented working in health systems. Though, yes, it is true that medical perspective suggests that COVID‑19 seems to hit men harder than women. Fatality rates for men who have come in contact with COVID‑19 are 65-85% higher than for women (WHO). A NEW YEAR OF NEW BEGINNINGS

Image
As cliché as it may sound, normally, at this time of year, everyone are concerned with figuring out what their New Year’s resolutions (that we probably won’t keep beyond the first week of January) would be. But as each and everyone of us knows, 2020 was not a normal year, and this is not a normal New Year’s Eve. Maybe, rather than resolutions, this might be a good time to think about what we can look forward to in 2021. Some of these ideas might be more wishful thinking than others. But with several vaccines in sight and are already in production for mass distribution worldwide, 2021 is full of far more possibility than the preceding year (hopefully). First off, it goes without saying that it was a long and hard year for all of us, and we’ve had to overcome a lot of challenges. This time last year, we as students were writing our New Year’s Resolutions as part of our activities after the long holiday break, I could’ve never imagined what the next several months would bring....
